Piet Mondrian

Piet Mondrian was a Dutch painter born in 1872. He evolved the term Neo-Plasticism. This consists of white ground with a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the three primary colors. When he entered the Acadamy for Fine Art he was already qualified enough to be a teacher.

When he moved to Paris in 1911 he changed his last name from Mondriaan to Mondrian to emphazie his departure from the Netherlands. He moved around a lot, and was inspired by several different things throughout the years. He experimented with Cubism for a while, and that is obvious in his painting The Sea. He often spent many long hours painting until his hands blistered and he cried or made himself sick.

In 1944 the last of his art surprised people because it was both kinetic and serene, stimulating and restful. Piet Mondrian said it was the best space he had ever inhabitated. But sadly, a few months later, he passed away from pneumonia.
